To be the first to know, please click here.Amazon has launched a debit card in Mexico, called Amazon Rechargeable, in an effort to encourage consumers without bank accounts to shop on its website, according to Reuters. The card is backed by Mastercard and Mexican bank Grupo Financiero Banorte, and can be loaded using cash at convenience stores throughout the country. There may be an option to reload the card online, although the company hasn't specified those details yet.Amazon Rechargeable is not the e-commerce giant's first push into the Mexican market.Amazon started pushing into Mexico last year. The company launched a service in Mexico allowing consumers to deposit money into their Amazon accounts at convenience stores like 7-Eleven. The service allows shoppers to add 100-5,000 pesos ($5-$27) per transaction and deposit up to 10,000 pesos ($522) per day into their Amazon accounts. But that service has some friction points — like not being available at Oxxo, a chain that accounts for 70% of convenience stores in the country — which could make the Amazon Rechargeable card a more convenient and accessible option to consumers. Low credit card penetration in Mexico has been a barrier to e-commerce in the country. Less than one-third of adults in Mexico have credit cards, and 80% of consumers consider cash to be their preferred purchasing method, as some are wary of online fraud. Those factors have made e-commerce largely inaccessible to many Mexican consumers, and have provided challenges to e-commerce businesses trying to establish a presence in the market. By enabling consumers without bank access to shop online, Amazon could improve its presence in the country and quickly establish brand loyalty, given that the debit card will enable shopping on its own site. The success of this debit card could be an indicator of Amazon's future plans. Amazon Rechargeable is Amazon's first-ever debit card. And it comes following rumors that the firm is branching out into other financial services initiatives, like the US checking-account-type product that it's reportedly in talks with Capital One and JPMorgan Chase about developing. While that's limited to the US, this debit card could serve as an indicator of what Amazon's ambitions might look like at home in the US, and could also point to a new blueprint that the e-tail giant and its peers could use to move into other emerging markets that, like Mexico, have limited access to e-commerce.
