Last year, Uber started the deployment of autonomous vehicles (AVs) for their ride-hailing service in Las Vegas. These Robotaxis are operated by Motional, a joint venture between Hyundai and Aptiv, and Uber has signed a 10-year deal with Motional. Yesterday, Uber announced that its autonomous driving service is now available in Phoenix, Arizona. Uber thus further expands autonomous driving in the U.S. In Phoenix, Uber is partnering with the AV company Waymo, which is owned by Google (Alphabet). In January 2023, Waymo achieved 1 million miles of public autonomous driving without a safety driver in test drives. Fully autonomous driving is still in the development phase, and autonomous vehicles (AVs) used for commercial purposes still require a safety driver. Since last year, the autonomous car industry has faced some setbacks. First there were the shutdown of Argo AI, the autonomous vehicle startup backed by Ford and Volkswagen, who had invested $1 billion and $2.6 billion, respectively. This week California's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) said it suspended Cruise's AV deployment and driverless testing permit, ending General Motors effort to test the cars without safety drivers in the state. The Uber news is encouraging for the industry, which is solving a big issue. According to the World Health Organisation approximately 1.3 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes, with more than half of these deaths are among vulnerable road users: pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. Economically, road traffic crashes cost most countries 3% of their gross domestic product.
